Red lipstick is a fab way to make a statement. If you’re thinking about clicking on a pretty red shade, go for it! Just make sure that the rest of your makeup complements your look. Since red is such a bold color, you’ll want to keep your eye makeup a little more straightforward.
Pile on the Mascara
Your red lips want to stand on their own, so stay away from the colored shadow on the eyes. Instead, keep the face mostly bare and top your look off with lots of mascara. Line eyes with liner if you like. If you’re going for an evening look, apply black mascara. If it’s during the day, go for the mascara that’s either your hair color or a shade of brown.
Make Your Eyes Sparkle
A soft shimmery eye is OK to pair with a red lip. Just make sure that you’re sticking to neutral colors like pearls and golds. Don’t go for an over-the-top metallic here. Instead, stick to subtly shimmery shades. Sweep them across the lid of the eye. If you want a bit of contrast, apply a bit of a soft brown to the brow bone or at the upper crease of the eye. Just make sure to blend it into your shimmery shadow.
Subtle Cat Eye
Get old-Hollywood posh with this one. Pair your red lips with a black cat eye. Just make sure to keep it a little more subtle, so your look isn’t too overpowering. Use a pencil, gel or liquid liner to create the look. Start your line at the inner corner of the eye and work it to the outer corner. When you reach the outer corner, gently flick your hand upward to create a winged-eye effect. Top with mascara to finish off the look.
If you’re wearing your perfect red shade but still want to glam up your eyes, it is possible. You just have to be careful. Take a note from Taylor Swift, who went played up both her eyes and lips at the 2011 MET Ball. Taylor wore a more natural smokey eye to pull this off. She sported shadow in brown, and gold topped off with mascara. According to makeup artist Lorrie Turk, this look worked because Swift didn’t opt for dark shadows. So, if you want to play up your eyes, stick to softer shades, and you’re ready to go.
